Photos in Text- Clipping Mask :

Photoshop CS

by Angie Svoboda

For making an easy image inside of text you will want to find a heavy font. I am using Cherub, which is a thick font. While a skinny font may look elegant, it will not have the surface area for the photo to show through. Choose an interesting image with a colorful background. I have picked a picture of my son of a bright sunny day.

We will use the "Clipping Mask" layer function in Photoshop CS for this example. You can use it to have a shape (i.e. text) on a layer mask the content of layers above it, which makes for some very fun and really cool possibilities. It's as if the base layer creates a window through which another image can be seen. I am using it to create a colorful photo-in-text effect with the country view.

Prepare your image. Choose a font and click on the type tool. Type the text you want to appear. Scale the font but changing the size to cover the area you want to show through. .

Make a copy of the background layer (your image) and move this new copy above the text layer. Click on the copy of the image (which should be the very top layer). Click Layer > Create Clipping Mask.

You will need to add a shadow to have the text show through. Right-click on the text's layer, to access the Blending Options, and apply a drop shadow. You will now see the text appear.

This is a very easy and fun tool to use. Have fun!!!
