This tutorial will help you make a title look like it was cut out of a patterned paper or cardstock. This can also be used to make alpha letters.

Open up your background paper (patterned paper or cardstock you will be using to cut the letters from).

File > Open (then browse for the paper to open and click ok)

Open up a new black document (or you can work on the layout you have open).

File > New

Set the dimension to 12 by 12 inches (or whatever size you scrap with), then set the DPI to 200 or 300. Click on "View advanced options" and then set the DPI as shown below. Click on done.

Then type the text on this black document (or on your current layout you are working on).

Text > Insert Text

The text box will default to the last setting of text you were working on. Change your setting and then type in the title you want on your layout. (in my example I am using a big fat font called Copper Black set at 108 size.)

Stretch the text box to fit how you want it on your layout. You may have to play with the size of the text to get the fit you want. Make sure it is how you like it because after you add the patterned paper to it you can not change the text again.

Right Click on your text box in the stack file. Then click on "flatten selected objects" (this action will make the text un-editable).

Next we will fill the text with our patterned paper.

Click on Effects > Fill with texture or color

Select Fill with Picture

This will open up your files stack, there you should see your paper that you want to fill the title (letters) with. Double click on the paper to load the selection into your title (letters). At this point you could always change your mind and fill the title with another picture or paper by clicking on "open a picture" and browsing for it.

You can drag around you paper and move before you click on done.

Once you are satisfied with the look click on done.

You now have your title (or letters) cut out of a patterned paper.

Now that was easy. Have fun and remember to post your creations in the DSP gallery.
